Betty, one of the local board members in Congo, meets the boy Jordan in a market on the outskirts of Kinshasa.
Jordan is one of the 7 street children with whom we currently have contact. Jordan is the one of the boys who has lived on the streets for the longest time.To survive. It's not easy, explains Jordan. To get food, the boys help the local residents to get rid of garbage. They also find food among the rubbish from the local markets.Jordan says that his father died when he was very small. At first he grew up with his mother and her mother's new husband. But Jordan's stepfather didn't like him, and every day he had to listen to the stepfather asking his mother to throw Jordan out of the house. Finally, the stepfather gave Jordan's mother an ultimatum. He demanded that she throw her son out if she wanted to stay in the marriage. Jordan's mother found the situation incredibly difficult, but ultimately ended up throwing Jordan out on the street.
Since Jordan was thrown out of his home, he found residence outside a police station in Kinshasa.
It is here, on the street in front of the police station, that Jordan spends his nights. He does not realize how old he is or how long he has lived on the streets. He only knows that it has been many years by now.
